Task 2C

Daniel Storey:
For this task 2C, I am going to be writing an blog diary where I am explaining about the personal and professional qualities that going to be fulfil this brief which the client has set us to complete it before the deadline date which has been set but for this unit of 32 and 5, I am going to be the producer for this project that we are going to be working on next which is making an suite of idents for the client of David Pearson.

Identify opportunities for self-development: During the role of being the producer, there is the opportunity of making sure that I keep myself well-organised during the pre-production, production and post-production stages because there is an deadline that we need to meet so the client will be able to work on-time which I am taking the previous experience of working within the music video production with this group.

New skills: By adding the previous experience of the Music Video production of making sure that the production team were well-organised and making sure that the work was done on-time but there is another experience that I can add my skillset is the reading and annotating the brief through the different sections of nature and demand which as a team, we discussed with the client about the different concerns that we had with the brief.

Multi-skilling: Due to having of group of four within a team, they will need to take some of the work that is required to be done so we are on-time in terms of the work being done but it is taking some of their skillset of doing this.

Contributions to project brief: In terms of the contribution to this project brief, I am the producer for this production team where I do make sure the suite of idents and other work that is required to be done on-time so we can meet the deadline that the client has set for the live brief of Unit 32 and 5 of the work needs to be handed in.

Lawrence:
I have the opportunity to self develop my skills as an individual. I have to document the progress being made through the production schedule, inspecting the cast and the crew, using call sheets, health and safety on set, and ensuring the conditions are met in order to begin filming. I have to maintain being organised and maintain contact with the director.

This gives me the opportunity to demonstrate multi-skilling. Which means that the role I am taking as an individual requires a variety of skills such as being organised which is essential. Communication is another one of the skills that is used mostly seeing as to how you need to manage the cast and keep in constant contact with the director.

My contribution to the project brief is that I am the assistant director for the production of these idents and I will make sure that the conditions to film will be met and call sheets will be prepared in time with the schedule.

This gives me the opportunity to learn new skills. During my experience with negotiating with the client we had to communicate with the client in order to understand how creative we can be whilst keeping to the client's demands.

Rosie:
My role to the project is that I am the director during the production of these idents and I will make sure that the everyone is doing their individuals parts correctly and helping where needed.

This will give me the opportunity to learn new skills. When negotiating with the client we had to communicate with the client in order to understand how creative we can be whilst keeping to the client's demands, getting experience with working with a client.

James:
My role for this is the role of the camera operator, I have the opportunity to further develop my knowledge in this area, it will enable me to gain further skills within the role of camera operating, i must be i constant contact with the Director more than anyone else within the production stages of this, along wth the pre production stages, this is because I must have a clear idea as to what the directors vision is for their idea. I am responsable for making sure that the footage is clear and representable for all viewing it.

I will also be responsable for making sure one of the storyboards are completed, this is for the ident from my idea, I will also be responsable for producing the animatic, once all of the other pre production material is completed.

This all requires multi skilling, meaning each member of the group demonstrates their skills through a different part of the roles, such as for me, as I am the camera operator, my part of the mutlie skilling will be using the camera.

Task 2B

Question 1 (Lawrence)

We had a meeting with the client on Tuesday 30th march 2017 in order to discuss information regarding the brief that was set for us. The client's name was David Pearson and we had to sit in our production teams to negotiate with the client in terms of what he wanted specifically and how creative we could be with these idents. We negotiated the fact that the idents could not be seasonal because there was no snow for winter, not enough sun for summer and no red leaves for autumn. So the client agreed that these idents don’t have to be seasonal anymore given the limitation.  Our second concern with the brief was the duration because we thought that it would be better if the duration could be shorter because our idents didn’t last as long as 30 seconds but our ideas were imaginative so therefore, we thought it would be a good idea to shorten the duration.

Question 2 (Lawrence)

During the negotiation process, there is always a degree of discretion with the client which means how creative we can be as long as we take the client’s ideas and suggestions into account in other words, David Pearson stated that we didn’t have to use only white and purple in our idents we could use a variety of colours but he wants to keep the colour scheme of the logo. He also stated that he wanted stakeholders, students, and the parents to perceive the college as formal so that limited the extent of our creativity since most of our ideas were formal but they weren’t engaging enough to entertain the target audience and fulfill the brief.

Question 3 Daniel Storey:

Before the time comes to making the suite of idents for the client so it does represent the college and handing it on the set deadline, we need to make sure that the legal, ethical and regulatory constraints are considered like for example: The client wants us and the other groups when making the idents (the ideas and themes that we have come with to promote the college in a respectful way) that it does not offended the audience in an religious way (any religion) when the times comes to showing the idents to them for the first time. This is because if this had happened in the real world then, it is possible that the people may call up OFCOM (Office of Communications) by complaining any particular ident that have seen which the company could end up considering suing the company by a lot of money since the designers are responsible for making it and could end up being fired from their job if the company ends up going bankrupt through the fine.

These types of rules within the constraints have been set by the government to make sure that the different television companies follows it to the last detail so they will not break like for example: the ethical constraints can be easily avoided by having different ethnicity's and having both genders within of making the four idents so it does stop from people from complaining that there has been discrimination at all when the final product is finished before the deadline so the client is able to see for the first time by giving his thoughts about it and seeing if there needs to be changes before actually releasing for the audience to watch.

Question 4 Daniel Storey:

While working on the different stages of production of making a product for the client who will want it finished by the deadline, it is very important to discuss with the client about what is best for this product as it is very likely that the ideas that we come up with in a space of time could get changed which we need to come into agreement about of what should the product look like in the end. So, when the other groups including us were meeting the client for the first time, we did discuss about the amendments of the final product which David Pearson wanted the 4 suites of idents to be put on a digital platform (YouTube) as we are promoting the college of Christ The King: St Mary's so it needs to convince the 15-19 year old students to come and study at the site since they are the target audience.

Although these suites of idents that need to be made for the client (David Pearson) for the 15-19-year-old students, he wants to make that it does target the parents as well since they will have key influence of making sure that their child make the right choice by joining and study the college but these questions were asked by Roopa's group. By speaking to the client, it is very important that we make sure to negotiate with him because he may suggest any amendments to the final version of the product which the idea could be used in an different way so it does match the type of season that you are planning to do for the four idents.

Question Five: Amendments to budget - James - (Me)

When we spoke to our client, there were questions that our production team wanted to raise during the initial meeting about any types of amendments that we wanted to make to the original budgets. The original budget that was given out to us was for a maximum of £50, we wanted to make a few smaller adjustments, we wanted to increase the budget slightly, this was in case we did not manage to hand the work in time for the deadline, however, a demand or suggestion such as this was not verified, this is because we must complete the work on time and must work to the deadline that was originally set for us. We wanted to also change the budget slightly because we thought that travel costs would put a major dent in to the budget, if we were to get the trains, however, as we discovered now we will not be using this type of transport regularly, we wouldn't need to increase the budget, however, we will be spending the budget mainly on props to fit in to the idea for the suite of idents that we have, also lunch on the days that we are out, will be used as money taken from the original budget we have provided for us.

Rosie:

As a group we all had to read the brief carefully to make sure we fully understood the requirements for the suite of idents. When speaking with the client we discussed the amendments needed to make the process better for example a longer deadline enabling us to get it down to the best of our ability and the high standard that is expected.

Brand Identity

Task 1B and 1C

Formal Brief - A formal brief is where a specific brief is handed over to the client, it is kept simple and will just outline what the specifications within the brief and what the company or client want you to carry out. This means that all of the specific details will be included in the brief and ever detail is written within it, to remove any issues later on done the line. It will always be a legal document that contains all f the rules and regulations that the company will need in order to complete what is written within the brief.

Advantages of a Formal brief - There are many advantages to a formal brief, these are the kinds of advantages that would be expected in any type of formal brief, for instance, it makes it looks more professional to the readers, to convey the correct image, a formal brief will make you look professional and prepared, as if you have gone over every detail, it will also ensure payment at the end of the contract, this is because it would be written in and included, meaning that if demands are not met, legally, you or the client would be able to sue, as the legal documentation has not been met.

Despite many advantages, there are also contrasting disadvantages, these would be that it is defiantly time consuming, as it is all written down in the document, also meaning that if certain demands are not met, either way, the party who do not have their demands met will be able to take legal action as the demands have already been written down and stated through the formal brief.

Informal Brief - An Informal brief is verbal, the opposite to a formal brief, where it is all written down, an informal; brief is on the word and verbally between the two parties involved.

The advantages to an informal brief would be that it is quick and simple, meaning all of the points you need to cover can be done within a shorter time frame and then more time can be spent planning and producing what is needed, it is also very casual, allowing it to be easily understood, it also means that because the information in the brief is not set in stone, it allows certain aspects of the brief to change throughout the process.

However, there are many disadvantages to an informal brief, one major factor being that because there is no legal documentation, it means that if you do not complete the work in time, there is no way that the client or company would be able to carry out any legal action, because nothing has been signed. It can also be seemed as looking unorganized and messy, mainly unprofessional and so an informal brief is unlikely to be used in a big situation because of the risks at can have.

Competition Brief - This is a brief where a company will purposely create a competition for different companies to create something for the brief that has been set, in the end there is only one winner and therefore winner will defiantly take all with a competition brief.

The Advantages of a competition brief would be that many different ideas can be generated through, so more than one good idea can be produced and the company will be able to pick the very best one to suit their brief.

However, there are also disadvantages, the main one being that the different companies taking part in the competition brief will be competing against each other and will have to use their own money to make the project and suit the brief, meaning that the different companies take a massive risk in losing a lot of money in order to win.

Commission Brief - A commission brief is when a large company will hire another smaller company to help carry out the brief with them.

Advantages of commission brief mainly are that the smaller company will be allowed to make money and their own profit by carrying out the brief.

The Disadvantages of this type of brief is that the companies can clash over different ideas, this is because they may not agree on certain things.

Tender Brief -  The Tender brief is when the brief is advertised to different clients, the final one will be submitted and decided once all has been advertised and all ideas are on the table.

Advantages for a Tender brief is that your work can still be used or sampled despite the fact that it may not even be chosen, the work may be chosen and used for a different project in the future from the same company.

There are Disadvantages to a Tender brief also, mainly being that it is very time consuming and a lot of time can be wasted, also, companies can clash as they have the same idea.

Negotiated Brief - A Negotiated Brief is when an agreement is needed, along with communication on the brief, allowing both parties to change their minds and negotiate certain specific changes to the brief. Meaning that the brief is not set in stone.

The advantages of a negotiated brief are that any issues that either the company or the client have can be resolved by negotiating any changes to the original brief, however they will not be heavy changes.

Disadvantages could be that agreements may not be made, for instance if the client doesn't agree with the company, then there could be issues needing to be resolved as neither party would be able to move forward in negotiations.

Contractual Brief -  This is a brief similar to a formal brief, where it is very formal and legally binding, meaning that if rules are broken and it has been signed, it is a legal document and can't be broken.

Advantages of a contractual brief are that there are not too may complications or delays with the brief and once everything is signed and ready, it is easy to follow and the company or client are ready to begin.

A disadvantage of a contractual brief is that once it is signed, there is know negotiating to be done and if the requirements are unfulfilled, then they company or client have the right to take any kind of legal action against you.
